Educational Philosophy

Day One

From the first day of class, and continuing through to the last, students are reminded their value and success in the course is not determined by something as simplistic or common as a letter grade. Students are encouraged to embrace the process of exploring, discovering, analyzing and experiencing the various aspects of the given curriculum. Success in the course is ultimately determined by the student's ability to analyze, reflect, and grow.

Beyond Dates & Dead People

The study of history is not the rote memorization of dates and dead people. Understanding history begins with understanding the common threads of the human story that are woven into the same tapestry over time. Students will come to see the mutual bonds shared with all people, throughout all of time, and how the difference between the ordinary person and the extraordinary person is often the showing of courage at the opportune time.

Holistic Assessment

Students will be offered the opportunity to showcase their talents and demonstrate evidence of learning through a variety of assessment modes, including written research and analysis, interrogatories, project-based learning (video, interviews, presentations, graphic design, etc.), reflection, and traditional standardized assessments.

Impacting the Community

The historical curriculum within the course comes to life. Beyond the study of primary and secondary historical sources, students will engage in real-world, beyond-the-classroom living curriculum through a series of intricately designed educational experiences. Rather than relying merely on stories of impactful people, students become the impact in their communities. Click here for examples.
